Default Fishing Line

I bought several packages of last year's Spiderwire XXX on sale. While tying a knot on 8 pound line it broke under very little pressure. That prompted me to test the 8, 17 and 20 pound line. I used my fish weighing scale and the line broke under 2, 6 and 7 pounds of pressure. Does fishing line weaken that quickly even while still in its original packaging? That prompted me to test my 14 pound test Iron Silk that is a couple of years old and it broke under 6 pounds of pressure. So, I am off to the tackle shop today for all new line on 9 reels. Does anyone have suggestions for the pound test and make of line to use for walleye jigging & lindy rigging and for casting spoons for pike?

Are the lines breaking at the knot? Also, was the line already used? There could have been some nicks or fraying. As for spiderwire, you'll get a lot of negative comments about it on this board.

The fishing line is new out of the package, but was on the shelf for over a year. No, in every case it did not break at the knot.

There are a lot of factors in play-age of the line, was it stored, how much UV light was it exposed to-To keep line as fresh as possible store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sulight.

Iron Silk-absolutely the worst line I have ever used for the reasons you mention-it breaks if you look at it wrong. I wouldn't waste your money on it in the future.
