Wierd Fish??!!

I went fishin Tuesday at a friends lake, and had a great day. I caught 2 decent sized largemouth and caught a whole bunch of wierd lookin fish. I didn't have my camera with me but i can describe them. They had the body and size of a smallmouth bass, but the color of a rainbow trout...strange to me, and my buddy didn't even know what they were. Anyway it was fun catching them because they were real aggressive, but I would just like to know what they were...lol

Sounds like a Drum. Did they have a purpelish/ silver color to them? If so it was a drum, they are a great fightinf fish. We used to catch them up in the lake in and around St. Louis.

Drum (sheepshead) would have a humpbacked appearance, a blunt snout and a rounded tail. I never saw a drum with a rainbow's coloring.

Did they look like a bass with small black dots on the body and a hint of yellow and red? I've caught these fish as well, but I have no idea what they are. But just like you said they are real aggressive. They would hit my plastic worm on every cast, and they are not of much size. I thought they were in the Bass family but at the same time they look kind of troutish?????????? I was fishing in a high quality Smallmouth stream in Arkansas when I caught these mystery fish. Anyone have any ideas?

IL.bassin, the fish almost looked like that without the large stripes, maybe the fish was in the perch family but it also might be some sort of darter.

Being that they where caught in arkansas I would tend to beleive that they where some type of cross breed fish. LMAO I dont beleive I just said that. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that Carnk had the best description of them. They didn't have a single stripe on them or many dots but they were silver in color and had like purpleish, and yellowish stripes that appeared in the sunlight. I really didn't care what it was it just interested me because I have never seen them before...I was just glad they were as aggressive as they were...what exactly is a drum? (besides the one you play...lol)

Lovin- That's a black drum, a saltwater species. Lots of fun to catch, cuz they get up to about 90 pounds, and you can 50-60 pounders aren't real hard to find.

That is the saltwater sheapshead. Some skill is needed for those and they are good to eat. But be carefull they'll steal you bait before you even know it!
