I took my nephew and niece fishing today. They like to keep a few fish to eat, so we kept three smallmouths. All three had crawdads in their stomachs. One had a crawdad that was only an inch long. The largest bass also had a small catfish in it. We caught two of the bass on cranks and one on a buzzbait. Seems to me we should have been using crawdad jigs.

A lot of people down here use crawfish as live bait for big smallies below the dams. They are a very high percentage bait.

The last tournament I fished, two of my fish had them somewhere. I wish they were inside, they spit them in the livewell, the largest crawfish was over an ounce!
That wouldn't have mattered in placing though, but it could have! |

i walked into a SERIOUSLY OLD bait/tackle store the other day. He had things from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's. A lot of it was seriously dusty stuff, a lot of junk, a lot of treasure. I managed to find a Bill Dance (I know I know, hopefully his name doesn't curse this lure) Crawfish. Talk about big, realistic, and texture. Its made from some sort of hydra foam or something and has a weighted tail area along with a crank lip. On the back of the package it says craws make up 70% of a bass' diet. I haven't tried the bait but prolly will soon.

I went fishing in a few creeks Yesterday with my friend and his dad. We went underneath this bridge where the water was real deep and we were using Yum crawdads. Bright colors. We would have had natural but somone stole my Tackle Box so i didnt have any bait. But we caught some nice small mouth. My friends dad was using an ultralight pole and five pound test. and he caught a real nice one. when it hit it almost ripped the pole out of his hands. We didnt have a camera with us otherwise i would get some pics up here. Next time i go im gonna bring one though.

In the latest issue of Bassmaster, there is an article about crawdads, in a study they made up 63% of sm diets.

Yes you said that already King.
![]() But don't think that you have to be throwing a crawfish imitating lure to catch smallmouth. I catch most of mine with lures that resemble baitfish.

Hook a crawfish under the tail and put a very very very small bobber above it, depending how deep you're fishing for length, this prevents the crawfish from crawling under rocks and getting you snagged. Also it keeps their legs and claws moving because its struggling to get to the bottom. The minute the little tiny bobber goes underwater, set the hook..and I'm sure you'll have a nice bass on there.

Caught a bass in a tournament once and at weigh in he had a crawfish coming out of his throat. I thought no way and I pushed the bait back in a sayed to myself "hey thats the way I caught you thats the way that you'll stay". I won by less than 2 ounces.

Hey Rod, That Dances Craw is a collectors item. They didnt catch fish but they were great at catching fisherman. They came in a red color and a green color. There was alos a Dances Eel. It didnt catch fish real weel either.
Craws are the preferred food of the smallmouth. Just about everything that swims will eat a craw. I use them on trott lines for Catfish. I will say this. I dont fish live bait for bass but when I put a real big one on the trott line it wont catch anything. The ones that are about two to three inches are best. Fish2win
