Default I'm New/NJ Fishing/Reel Rod

Well, at the end of last summer, I got back into fishing.
I purchased a raft the other day(coming in the mail next week). I would of bought a boat, but I don't have the funds for that. A raft should hold me off.

Anywho, I'm from Central Jersey and fish the lakes around here. I haven't had that much luck, but I get some here in there. Hopefully with the boat it'll be a lot better.

Anywho, I'm wondering what a decent rod/reel setup would consist of?

Thanks for the help

Welcome Kevin, and also welcome to Joeoutboard and Flukemaster. There, I killed three birds with one stone.

Enjoy your raft; it should help get you to some good waters that you can't fish from shore.

As to a rod/reel setup you mentioned: are you looking for one type of combo that can be used as a general purpose outfit? I use a 6'6" medium power, fast tip rod and a Daiwa 2500 size reel with 10# line.

That may not be everybody's idea of a good combo, but it has worked well for me for years.

Good luck.

PNJ, there is a type of inflatable material that hooks will not penetrate. at this one weigh in festival tourny type thing they had an inflatable lack bottom thing set up and you could fjip jigs in spots and win stuff. welcome kevin, a good rod/reel if you want spinning would be the pflueger president reel. i have just purchased one of these combos, and for the price(60.00) it is a great rod/reel.

Hey Kevin, Welcome, Marty's set up is good, but I would prefer a 6' MH rod with a Quantum catalyst reel for spinning and a 6'6"MH rod and a Pflueger, Pinnacle or Bass Pro shop reel for casting gear. If you have alot of money , I can change my choices and get more specific if you had a figure in mind to spend. P N J

Yes, I'm looking for a reel/rod that can be used as a general purpose outfit.

I looked up the pflueger president reel and I've never used one of the rod/reel's before. Looks promising
though

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. Maybe $60-$100 at most. And if you could provide a link to where I could purchase it so I know what I'm looking at.

Yeah, it'll be nice to have a nice little raft to get to spots that I normally couldn't get too. I told myself last summer that I would get a boat, but my car obsession took over my funds. The raft should do a decent job. I can't wait, heh.

Thanks for the welcomes and suggestions. Anyone else from NJ?

kevin, yoou can get the president at basspro shops.(basspro.com) but it may be alittle more expensive. do you have a sports authority near you? thats where i got mine for $60 dicks sporting godds might have them. i dont know cause i have never been to one.
so do you usually use a baitcaster or a spincaster(think zebco)? i think the spinning reel is the easiest to use out of all of them.

I'm sorry, I was looking at the wrong link. Yes, I do use spinn casters. I'm not used to the termanology.
And yes, I do have a dicks and sports authority right by me. I have a friend who works at sports authority, so I can get a nice discount also, which is nice.

Should it come with a rod and what size should it be?

well, at the sports authority they should have a combo. you will have to go there and look around. the size depends on what you use it for. if you get the combo, then the bigger reel is on the 7' fod, i really dont like 7' rods, i have one for my crank baits tho. the smaller one comes with the 6'6'' rod which i really like, so that is the one i got. and it really is a good size. the combo is really the best way to go unlees you want the bigger reel and smaller rod and vice versa. that might cost you more tho. just look at them and see which one suits you better.

Well, the lakes I try to fish are Farrington Lake, Dallenbach Pond, Davidson's Mill Pond, and some other random ones. Theres a private pond by me thats illegal to fish in... but there always seems to be people in there.

Yeah, I haven't gone to many lakes/ponds. Like I said, I've only gotten back into fishing at the end of last summer. And last time before that was when I was in 8th grade, heh. I'm 20 now.

I can honestly say I'm horrible at fishing, but I do enjoy it a lot. It would be nice to fish with someone that knows what they're doing, lol.

As for the biggest bass last summer, well...

Caught it on a black/blue spinner bait at around 10am in Dallenbach Pond. Big pond.

Anywho, I'm going to try to get really into it this summer and hopefully catch some good sizes or rather, catch fish.

Yeah, I have no idea on lbs. I didn't have a scale with me. Caught it on a Strike King Rattlin Midnight Special Black/Blue spinner bait

Welcome to the show The first bit of advice I'll give you is email bassintom and take him up on his offer. You couldn't ask for a better teacher on bassin. He does however sometimes seem to be stuck on the same bait a 4" Powerworm in Red Shad ;D. Secondly, since you are new to the bassin game, I would reccomend a 6'6" MH spinnig reel and rod combo. The spinning reel is much easier to learn and handle, and the 6'6" MH(Medium Heavy) rod will help you get the hooksets better, and is a great all around rod, that can be used for tons of different applications. Now as you are seeing though that several of us have different opinions, which is always the case. You will have to decide for yourself what you like. Good luck, and now you have to watch out for the Bait monkey, he'll drain your wallet in no time flat

What types of lures should I pick up? I'm partial to spinner baits.

I would suggest some spinners then!!!

i've had decent luck lately with top water poppers and buzzbaits.

and i had some luck using tiki sticks specifically in watermelon/red flake and cinnamon/blue flake
