~a jerk bait is long and skinny and has a small lip on it depending on the size they could have three sets of treebles
~crankbaits are shorter and more compact and they dive according to the size of the bill the bigger the bill the deeper it will go ~on plastics there are so many variations i dont know where to begin

A plastic jerkbait, Mark, is a soft plastic minnow imitating lure. Usually you rig these weightless and texas style. Retrieve them with short jerks, and pauses between jerks. Your trying to imitate an injured minnow. A wooden or plastic jerkbait is essentially designed to be fished the same way. Such as Smithwick Rattlin Rouge and the Rapalla stickbaits. The main difference with these lures are that they are hard bodied and come in either floating models or sinking. And some suspend after you jerk them and stay pretty much at the depth you jerked them to. They also can be used to retrieve slowly or quickly with a built in action of their own. Many models have rattles built into them to attract fish from further away out of eyesight. Hard jerk baits are not weedless, while soft plastic jerk baits can be easily made weedless via the texas rig. I prefer to use both methods early and late in the season up north here. They will work in the summer too, but durring the summer I have other lures and applications which work faster and better at that time of year. However, when the water is cold and bass are sluggish, jerk baits work well where faster lures often get ignored. I hope this helps.
