Depends on the size of the pond, we fish a lot of farm ponds in south MS. I like to throw small lures like the Strike King bitsy minnow, and a 4" curly tail worm. I scale up if I find some bigger fish. Good luck.

Welcome Lazycrickett, I've had success with senkos and texas rigs.

um one rig for the first time you fish it... wacky worm... use a finnesse worm from Zoom or use a senko... just hook it through the middle and let it sink.... you will catch fish on this..... no 2nd thoughts..... thats all i use the first time i fish a new pond....

you can texas rig it but my favorite way is to insert a jig head in side. with the jighead inside i let it fall and then swim it a couple feet while jigging it and then let it fall but i never let it hit the bottom. sometimes i let it fall all the way to the bottom and then lift it up and let it fall again. some times i swim it all the way back to the boat jigging it all the way. i have caught a ton of bass on a tube jig. i rarely texas rig them, mostly because there are better options.

Lazycricket, I've been rigging them with a Tubehead weighted hook, here are the specs. size 4/0 : 60 degree : 1/4 oz(this varies according to thickness of cover), here is a picture, this should help with understanding. You would rig it alot like a Texas Rigged worm.
I like to cast it in and around cover and fish it basically the same way you would a plastic worm or jig, I like fishing them slow especially when around alot of cover. Hope this help and I'm sure there will be others that will be willing to offer you some tips, there are so many ways to rig a tube they are all very effective. ~Mark |

I fish a few ponds myself i like to go to them after having a bad day at a tournament or just a bad day because i know i can go catch a bunch of fish. My top 3 lures are a Paca Craw. A 1/2oz. stanley wedge spinner bait and belive it or not a hollow belly swim bait. i also catch a lot of fish on a wacky worm.

for real now, lazy, you can use ANY lure you want in a pond. after all a lake is just an oversized pond. one thing i ALWAYS had luck with is a rooster tail in the shallows. mann's 8"jelly worm (grape), spinners (all sizes). never used jigs though, it should work along the dam or around pillings and peirs though. use what YOU have the most confidence in pal.
oh yea, welcome to the house of nuts bait monkey fodder.

Don't forget about the top water. I throw poppers, spooks, and buzz baits alot in the ponds.
Except for deep cranks and drop shotting, there is not much that I won't throw into the ponds.

Any skipped bait has worked in ponds better than larger lakes for me. I like flukes in those locations.

I use a popper and spinner baits. Size by how big the fish are. Also like to use a plastic shad hooked anyway that gets attention.

I will add that if you fish the same pond for any extended period of time then the fish do find a way to catch on. Be prepared to mix up baits and colors.
I have seen fish tear up a particular bait two weeks in a row and then go lockjaw on it for a couple of months. I would also keep an eye in the shallows for any bait fish or crawdad's. You might not see the Dads but pieces of it, usually a claw or tail. This will help you pick the bait.

To cover water fast id go with a Spinnerbait, If you know there are bluegill in the pond which there should be... and the water is Semi-clear, or even a bit stained, Blue/chartruse, spinnerbait, with a single colorado, or double colorado spinner would put out not only alot of vibration, but some flash to help the fish key in on your bait, Silver if the sun is out, and gold if the sun is behind the clouds, easier way of putting this is:
(Blade choice gold or Silver?) Darker Sky=Gold Blades Sunny Sky=Silver blades In between sunny and Cloudy, one gold, One silver. very simply put. ![]() Use the spinner bait close to Structure, wake the spinner bait just below the surface, If you know what i mean by this., Keep your rod tip high, and a steady semi-fast retrieve, Also focus on finding structure And by Structure i mean anything that looks ab-normal, Like Stick~ups, Brush piles, lay downs <-trees in water, Old tires, Rocks, anything that would give a bass a "sense of Cover" If you can get the bait AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE< and by this i mean Really close!!! in fact you want to be BUMPING THE OBJECT YOUR CASTING TOO WITH YOUR SPINNER BAIT, Don't be scared to make it come into contact with the structure, this is how u get bit..Also make sure too use a stinger hook, for those short "stun" strikes bass often will make to stun what they believe is a wounded bait fish, and also get yourself a Nice crazy action trailer for the main hook, White with red fire tips is what i use 90% of the time, But if your using a blue/chartruse skirt color, try matching it with Something maybe green, or Blue. (the colors of a bluegill) ![]() Ive even caught some of my bigger bass in and around Plastic bags in a local pond i fish almost weekly, Seems every time i go there Ill make 3-4 cast to each plastic bag, KNOWING the bass are close to it. It's when i'm Making the spinner bait Hit the plastic bag, The bass BANG! my spinner bait
